No reason Brexit deal will not be successful, says Merkel

There is “zero indication” that Britain will walk away without a Brexit deal, although the next phase of Brexit negotiation talks will be “a bit more difficult” says Angela Merkel. Speaking during a dinner in Brussels, the German chancellor said there is “zero indication” that Brexit talks will fail and claimed she is in “permanent conversation” with Prime Minister Theresa May. Her comments followed the Prime Minister’s rejection of a large Brexit divorce bill. Instead May appealed for a deal she could “defend” to the British people. Merkel went on to say that critics suggesting Theresa May should walk away

ALMR welcomes PM’s commitment to EU nationals

Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) has responded to an open letter from Theresa May, in which she made a commitment to EU nationals living in the UK. The letter, which was published on her Facebook page, said that the right of EU nationals “remained a priority” and ensured that staying in the UK after Brexit would be a “simple process”. The association has welcomed the letter’s reassurances on the future status of EU migrants in the UK. Kate Nicholls, ALMR chief executive, said: This is the first official, public and unconditional confirmation from the Prime Minister that employers will

BHA: Government plans to avert hospitality staff crisis ‘too late’

The British Association (BHA) has said that plans to encourage more British people to consider a career in hospitality and tourism after Brexit have been hindered by the government’s decision to delay introducing new technical qualifications in England for the industry until a year and a half after the anticipated end of free movement. Ufi Ibrahim, the BHA chief executive, has written separate letters to the Immigration Minister and the Education Minister expressing her “dismay” at the decision and urging them to “reconsider this oversight.” She fears the delay will cost jobs and growth. She also pointed out that the

ALMR calls for hospitality minister to deal with industry ‘uncertainty’

UK industry must be given a dedicated hospitality minister to deal with the sector’s ‘uncertainty’ during the country’s discussions to leave the EU, says the ALMR. ALMR chief executive Kate Nicholls will speak at today’s ALMR Autumn Conference, calling upon the government to appoint the role. Nicholls says: “UK businesses are facing an unprecedented period of political and economic instability. Uncertainty, chiefly prompted by Brexit, is undermining businesses’ attempts to plan and invest and we need clear action from the government to address this. “There is need for a national role to span these issues and ensure that crucial businesses

Leaked government plans on migrants condemned by BHA, UKinbound

Hospitality bodies UKinbound and the British Hospitality Association (BHA) have had their say on leaked government documents that appear to suggest immigration targets will be met by reducing the intake of low-skilled EU migrants after Brexit. The 82-page paper – leaked to the Guardian and subsequently widely covered in the media – showed the government was considering reducing the numbers of low-paid EU workers, putting caps on the time they can spend here, and making it harder for them to bring family members over to the UK. It was reported that there would be a minimum income requirement for anyone
