British hotels see strong start to holiday season

Hotels across the UK enjoyed a welcome boost in revenue per available room (RevPAR) and occupancy rates during July, the beginning of the peak holiday season, data by ALMR shows.

British hotels in the maintained steady occupancy in July, with figures of 86% which were up by 0.3 points compared to June.

Due to increased prices, RevPAR grew by 5.3% compared to the same month last year.

The results tally with recent figures from VisitBritain which showed that the overall number of overseas visits to the UK for the first half of 2017 was a record-breaking 19.1 million, up 9% compared to the same period in 2016.

Kate Nicholls, chief executive of the ALMR said: “The figures clearly demonstrate that interest remains high in ‘Destination UK’ among both domestic and international visitors.

“Driven by a favourable exchange rate, the performance of the hotel and accommodation sector goes from strength to strength.”

She added: “We have an increasing body of members who operate in this sector, and as the only national trade body dedicated to representing the interests of licensed hospitality operators, it’s encouraging that the data paints a continuing positive picture for the industry in the UK and throughout Europe.”
