Real Living Wage will ‘challenge’ hospitality industry

Real estate company, Colliers International has said that the introduction of the voluntary Real Living Wage will present a “challenge” to the hospitality sector. The Real Living Wage rose by 3.6% to £8.75 per hour regionally and by 4.6% in London, bringing it up to £10.20 per hour. Katherine Chapman, director of the Living Wage Foundation, said the increase was influenced by the level of inflation which is currently at 3%. The Rutland Hotel in Sheffield changes hands

The Rutland Hotel in Sheffield has been sold to international hotel operator Ellerslie for an undisclosed sum. The four-star hotel is located off Broomfield Road in the university area of Sheffield and has 63 ensuite bedrooms. The hotel was marketed openly at an asking price of £2.65m. Ellerslie has acquired the hotel from Claypenny Hotels Limited in a sale secured by Colliers International. Ellerslie is an established hotel operator and currently owns and operates the Discovery Inn in Leeds city centre. Airbnb could lead to lower business rates for hoteliers

Hotel operators should be able to appeal against their business rates due to the impact of “disruptors” in the market such as Airbnb, say real estate agency, Colliers International. According to Colliers, the rise in volume of Airbnb lettings should be seen as a “material change” to the hotel industry, and because Airbnb operators don’t pay business rates, the company believes this should be taken into account.
